2025 has been a busy and exciting year at Awutu Winton, and we’re grateful for the continued support we receive. Collaboration has been a major theme, and we’re proud to share some highlights so far. We also remain the top-performing Senior High School in the district.

Volunteers

Steph joined us in January, bringing expertise in operations and supporting projects from the Agri Garden to girls’ empowerment and the Optibac Artist Residency. In July and August, Kerry Gunu supported Economics and Government, helping Form 3 students prepare for their WASSCEs.
Izzie finishes her year with us in September—she has made a lasting impact, especially through sports.
We look forward to welcoming Amber from Holland, who will take over sports coaching.

Agri Garden

Our new Kitchen Garden offers hands-on agricultural learning, combining traditional farming with modern, sustainable techniques. Students are actively involved in planting, composting, soil and water management, while grounds staff maintain the farm. This long-term project is building both skills and confidence.

Optibac Artist Residency

This new programme, sponsored by Optibac, will host a professional Ghanaian artist at Winton for three months. Steph has been linking with the Ghanaian art community, and after 17 strong applications, interviews are now underway. The residency will connect students with professional practice and inspire new career paths.

Sports

Sports remain central at AWSHS:

  • Rugby: Boys are competing in the national league, while the girls scored their first-ever try.

  • Netball: Under Izzie’s guidance, the girls grew in skill and confidence, even running their own session with Team Akwaaba Volunteers.

  • Water polo: The boys’ A team won the National Finals again; meanwhile, girls are building water skills through weekly surf lessons.

  • Football: Boys won the Regional Championship in May.

  • Cricket: Training with Ghana U21s Captain has boosted both boys’ and girls’ performance, with a big new kit donation on the way.

Canford School Visit

In July, 12 Canford students and staff joined us for two weeks, attending classes, playing sports, creating murals, and visiting partner organisations. Their cultural exploration included Accra, Cape Coast, and Kokrobite. We value this ongoing partnership greatly.

Partnerships

In August, we hosted a joint meeting with Future Stars, GMAD, and Mankoadze College to explore collaboration and shared challenges. A key outcome was the launch of a joint solar education project, offering students hands-on training with solar technology.

Fundraising

  • Paul Maddicott completed the Peking to Paris Rally, donated a shipping container, and raised significant support.

  • Ed Loveridge & Max Hansen cycled 4,000 km from the Arctic Circle, raising over £5,000.

  • Canford students raised £3,500 through the 3 Peaks Challenge.

Donations

Generous donations this year have included reusable sanitary products, clothing, school supplies, arts and sports equipment, musical instruments, books, and solar technology. A new shipping container—thanks to Paul Maddicott, Dainton Self Storage, and The Worshipful Company of Girdlers—will be converted into office and storage space once unloaded.

October Fundraiser

Join us on 18–19 October at Breach Farm Brewery, near Andover, for a weekend of socialising, fundraising, and events, including the Great South Run. Full details are on our website.
