July 31st 2011
Well the third term ended last week and that means the first year has been completed at the Awutu-Winton School and the 103 students currently at the school have gone off for a well-earned break, along with the staff who (under the guidance of EDP Project manager, James, ably supported by Deputy Headmaster Seth , plus all the rest of the teaching and support staff) , have put a tremendous amount of work into getting the school off the ground this year. The school will reopen for year Two in September and our aim is to get the numbers up to 175 by the end of October.
However the EDP team are left with plenty of work in the interim to get on with! Firstly there is a visit – the first of many we hope - by a group of 8 students from Winton School, Andover, accompanied by two teachers, and they are busily engaged in decorating the phase 2 class room block.
George Godson, The Enterprise Manger, now supported by latest volunteer Rachel Schmieder, is in the process of gearing up the juice project with a third and fourth Kiosk being located further afield in an attempt to boost sales further, and the Winton team have just painted a group of 10 bee hives ready for George to prime them next week and kick-start the honey project.
The student sponsorship scheme has also grown steadily since we last reported on it in March and we now have over 40 students being sponsored (£35 a month, £400 a year).
We still need more though if we are to achieve our aim of getting 100 children sponsored by the end of 2011 which would be enough to pay for up to 10 teacher salaries , so if you are interested , or know anyone who would like to help, please get in touch via email to :
and we will send out a sponsorship form to you by return.
Thank you everyone for your help and support.

Second Term at Awutu-Winton Senior High School and 'Sponsor a Pupil' Program now under way!
The second term is now well under way and pupil numbers are up to just over 100. The curriculum is being expanded and now includes elective subjects : Geography, Government and Economics as well as IT and a comprehensive science offer. The Science Lab, due to open in September, will allow the full curriculum to be followed in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
We are engaging in a number of fund raising ideas, including the potential production of our own in-house pineapple juice drinks, which were launched under the supervision of UK volunteer George Godson in February , a local honey production line, and other possible agricultural applications, as well as trying to get some 'out of hours' classes going on the Adult Education side in the IT lab.
However, we need extra funds to pay for the teaching. The school aims to be free of fees to all secondary students, (which sets it apart from other secondary schools) from the outset and we aim to keep it that way - to help bring education to the youngsters in remoter areas whose families would otherwise have no money to be able to afford their kids an education!
We now have 3 full classes functioning, with 105 pupils, and our plan is to try and get all of the pupils sponsored to pay for the teachers.
Awutu-Winton Senior Secondary School, Pupil Sponsorship:
We have calculated that a standing order of just £25 per month for three years is sufficient to provide the instruction to put one student through school, and this will include a contribution to travel costs if necessary. The three year curriculum for a senior secondary school is set by the government: core subjects are Maths, Integrated Science, Social Sciences and English, but we intend to offer in addition courses in Business Studies, General Arts, Agriculture and IT, as well as encourage a range of extra curricular activities.
Just £25 per month for three years will help to fund a child through the Awutu Winton School – a small gesture but one which will make a huge difference to that child’s life.
If you are interested in finding out more please email david@edp-trust.org and we will forward you our sponsorship information pack.
A big ‘thank you’ to the 32 of you who are already sponsoring a child and the first letters from your sponsored student are in the process of being despatched during March .
